Choice and placement of speakers must be done carefully and in accordance to several rules of acoustics to avoid distortions, for example one known as “comb filtering”. Surround speakers should cover a wide area at a constant sound pressure level. The height, position and aiming are critical for a natural rendering of the surround effects. Great care must be given to the placement of the subwoofer in particular as it is very sensitive to modal resonances. Final positioning is done with the help of a precise MLS analyzer; a shift of even a few inches can make a big difference in sound quality.
